Why Is Pinterest So Addictive? an Infographic

Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo-sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, and hobbies.

Users can browse other pinboards for images, ‘re-pin’ images to their own pinboards, or ‘like’ photos.

The site was founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp, the site is managed by Cold Brew Labs and funded by a small group of entrepreneurs and investors.

Column Five created this infographic to examine the Pinterest addiction that seems to be spreading like a zombie apocalypse virus. Proof? Pinterest users spend an average 98 minutes on site per month, third only to Tumblr (2.5 hours) and Facebook (7 hours). Antidote? None.

Beyond the data, the company examines why Internet culture is so fascinated with pinning. It posits that digital hoarding has a lot to do with it. On Pinterest, we have free license to create an entire board dedicated to “teal-colored guitars.”

Pinterest can be really addictive but didnt notice all new pins go on the front page until know so that would make it easy for anyones image to go viral.

Althoug I am active on PI, I often wonder about the lack of Differentiation of the usage of social Networks. I see People pinning pictures not only on PI but the same pictures on G+, FB, Twitter, Instagram and Flicker. The Differentiation seems to be a challenge.

    Cheers from Germany.

I love my Pinterest board but I’m not actually addictive, i think the social networks should remain at their places and not interfere with real life. The infographic is really helpful. Thanks

I get that folks enjoy the visual stimulation. I am just not quite visual enough to personally get hooked.

pinterst certainly can have an addictive element to it. It's a great interface for collecting images you love and easily separating them into categories then sharing it all with your friends. As a photographer it also proves to be quite a visually pleasing way to show off my work.
