What is a hashtag? Well, on Twitter – and increasingly everywhere else – a hashtag is a word or phrase (with no spaces or punctuation) prefixed with the # symbol, offering users an easy way to communicate around a single theme.

For example: #WordPress.

While the history of the hashtag (certainly in its modern use) traces back to IRC, it was only with the rise and dominance of Twitter that this powerful tool really came to prominence.

Today, hashtags are used everywhere, particularly by brands in the music and entertainment industry, and they’ve now become so popular, and so normal, that even Facebook is looking to get in on the action. Check the infographic below for your fast, one-page guide to everything you need to know about hashtags.

SEO Social Media Tip of today: Site Speed (please unlock)

Site Speed

Neil Patel with Quicksprout has talked a lot about this on his blog, but It’s something I’ve seen over and over again. Keep in mind it could be a bit technical!

Why? – Google is always after providing the best customer experience. But if you have a site full of rich content that takes a minute to load, they also know that the user is probably not going to wait for it to load. Instead they’re going to bounce. Speeding up your site will give your website visitor exactly what he or she wants now. It is also a ranking factor for your site. If your page takes too long to load, consider your site toast.

For the technically adept, hashtags are a very useful tool. Most of the world doesn’t understand them. You can tell a lot about a platform’s target market by the implementation of tags.

Any thoughts about if thought leaders, authorities, etc use hashtags? Or is it people who WANT to be?

Most useful for me is knowing which platforms now use the hashtags.

    Thanks.

Using hashtags is the one of the best innovative ideas in web development, it’s quite easy to implement in development no need to create a special database for categories hashtags can do anything.
I am also working on an online community where I am going to use this hashtag feature!

  23. Lindsay Fultz 3 april 2013 om 23:27

Confused. It says Pinterest just dropped hashtags cutting ties with Twitter but at the bottom it's listed as a website that supports them..

  24. Neil Silverthorn 4 april 2013 om 00:12

great post – hash tags have been useful on twitter since day 1 and great to see other platforms "following" twitters success with it.

  25. Rex Dow 4 april 2013 om 03:54

  27. Cora Dugan 17 april 2013 om 23:50

incorrect info- hashtags as you stated were dropped on Pinterest but yet it states they support it… Pinterest has dropped the use of hashtags to confirm.
