WordPress Plugins
Wordpress heeft al veel functionaliteit aan boord wanneer je de software geïnstalleerd hebt op de server. De mogelijkheden van Wordpress kunnen echter nog verder worden uitgebreid door plugins te installeren.

Plugins zijn scripts die de functionaliteit van Wordpress uitbreiden. Ze worden (meestal gratis) gemaakt door bloggers over de hele wereld. Er zijn talloze Wordpress plugins beschikbaar. Zo zijn er plugins voor het maken van een contactformulier, het optimaliseren van je blog voor de zoekmachines, het toevoegen van een sitemap, het tonen van recente reacties in de sidebar van je blog en nog veel meer.

Er zijn diverse sites waarop plugins aangeboden worden. Wij raden je aan altijd gebruik te maken van plugins die op de officiële Wordpress site aangeboden worden:

Je kunt daar bijvoorbeeld eens kijken welke plugins populair zijn bij anderen. Zo vind je misschien plugins die ook voor jouw site nuttig kunnen zijn.

Wat is WordPress?
WordPress is gratis CMS en weblog-software, die onder de GPL-licentie wordt gepubliceerd. WordPress is oorspronkelijk ontworpen als software waarmee je kunt bloggen; een weblog of blog bijhouden dus. Een weblog maakt het mogelijk berichten te plaatsen, waarop vervolgens gereageerd kan worden door andere gebruikers. Een weblog kent over het algemeen geen statische pagina’s en dat is dan ook het grootste verschil met reguliere websites.

WordPress is de afgelopen tijd enorm doorontwikkelt en tegenwoordig uitstekend te gebruiken als Content Management Systeem (CMS). Met de toevoeging van statische pagina’s aan de weblog is de interactieve presentatiesite ontstaan. WordPress heeft dus eigenlijk twee werelden samengebracht; statische pagina’s met dynamische vernieuwende berichten in blogvorm.

WordPress is ontwikkeld door Matthew Mullenweg, maar het wordt door een flinke groep ontwikkelaars ondersteund. Veel weblogs en websites maken inmiddels gebruik van WordPress. WordPress maakt gebruik van de PHP-programmeertaal. Alle content wordt opgeslagen in een MySQL-database.

Per WordPress-installatie is één weblog of website te beheren. Door middel van thema’s (themes) of zelfgemaakte template files is de opmaak van pagina’s aan te passen, zodat er geen gebruik hoeft te worden gemaakt van de standaard vormgeving die WordPress levert. Ook zijn er talloze plugins beschikbaar die allerlei functies aan het weblog toevoegen. Een aantal daarvan zijn bijvoorbeeld spam filters (bijvoorbeeld SpamKarma of Askimet) of kleine scherm detectie (Mobiele telefoon, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, etc.).
