Nieuwe Features Voor WordPress 3.1

Jane Wells heeft een bericht geschreven over de toekomstplannen voor WordPress 3.1. De bedoeling is dat er geen grote features toegevoegd gaan worden aan 3.1, een update van hoe WordPress met Media omgaat zit er helaas dus nog niet in, maar bovenal een optimaliseren van de code en alles meer solide maken.

Een paar kleine dingen die wel toegevoegd gaan worden zijn features als:

  • Internal Linking: Gebruikers kunnen vanuit bestaande content om hun eigen site links toevoegen zoals dat nu ongeveer ook gaat om een externe link toe te voegen.
  • Ajaxified Admin Screens: Hiermee wordt het sorteren, zoeken en pagineren beschikbaar gesteld voor de meeste admin menu’s via Ajax.
  • Administration Bar: De admin bar gaat lijken op wat ze bij WordPress.com ook gebruiken. De multi-site gebruikers van een multi-site installatie zullen er het meeste baat bij hebben, maar ook als gewone gebruiker is de toegang naar de verschillende admin functionaliteiten een fijne plus. Overigens heeft Matt Mullenweg aangegeven dat de admin bar een opstap is naar een volwaardige front-end editor.

  2. WordPress 3.1 to be last edition to support PHP 4 and MySQL 4

    WordPress developers have announced that they are planning to end support for PHP 4 and MySQL 4 with the upcoming editions of WordPress.

    WordPress 3.1 would be the last edition of WordPress to officially support PHP 4 and MySQL 4.

    WordPress 3.2 would require PHP 5.2 or higher, and MySQL 5.0.15 or higher.

    Drupal and Joomla are two other popular CMS solutions which are on the same path discarding support for older PHP and MySQL editions.

  3. The WordPress development team had a very successful meeting last Thursday, where they solidified their plans for WordPress 3.1.

    The finalized goals for WordPress 3.1 are “to have a very short dev cycle, a decent amount of testing time, and a release in mid-December. Low on new features, heavy on ui and code cleanup, and avoidance of schema changes. Save the big ideas for 3.2 where we’ll have the liberty to implement those ideas in PHP5. No schema changes and no big new APIs.”

    Besides bug fixes and code cleanup, users can look forward to a new wordpress.com inspired admin bar and theme browser, as well as post templates and styles, and a separate network dashboard.

    The team plans to halt new feature submissions on October 15th, followed by a primary code freeze on November 1st, and a string freeze on December 1st. The beta period will begin November 15th until the estimated final release date of December 15th.

    Keep in mind that this will be the last major release to support PHP and MySQL 4. If your hosting provider has not yet switched to PHP 5.2 or higher and MySQL 5.0.15 or higher, it’s time to start bugging them.

    Personally, I’m really looking forward to seeing what will come of the development team’s focus on bug fixes and code cleanup with this release. What are you looking forward to in WordPress 3.1?
