The History of Social Media – #infographic

From the first e-mail to the domination of Facebook and Google, social media has come a long way

The very purpose of the Internet (every blog, website and virtual gathering place within it) is to let people connect, communicate, and collaborate. So the concept behind Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social networking tools isn’t new. These sites just give us new, sexy, and easy-to use ways to do what we’ve always wanted to do online — exchange ideas and information.

The Internet has always been social, and it always will be. Still not convinced? Here’s a handy timeline that might dispel any further historical myths about the true nature of the Internet, and where we’re all going with it, together:

  5. Fun read; particularly to think back and remember some of the old sites and technologies; then to realize that they really aren’t that old.

  8. The first online payment processor was launched in June of 1996, now there are several which are accepted world-wide. I have been active on the internet since mid-95 and I have seen all of these changes, as well as many others.

  13. [...] History of Social Media is totally [...]

  14. I've been in high tech for over 20 years, so back then, it wasn't called "social media", it was just a form of "marketing". Nice to have that word now as an umbrella for Marketing as there are a number of ways to "market your product or services".
