Digital Agenda Social Media Assembly 2012 of the EU Commission

Website: http://www.digitalagendastrategy.eu/
FB page: https://www.facebook.com/DigitalAgendaEurope
FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/daeurope/

“As you may have heard, I joined a team of top notch Social Media strategists and practitioner to create a pan European Social Media initiative. It’s a fascinating engagement to help the various European countries leverage Social Media to thrive and grow new jobs. If you want to know more about it, please check the page on Facebook http://fb.com/DigitalAgendaEurope. We trust that eventually this will be co-funded by the EU Commission after we present this to the EU in June. Please help us gain visibility and let your European friends know about this.” Thanks

We need help from all Social Media guru’s in all EU Countries, please read and join us!

Please try to make this meeting Thursday 16:00 CEST (Berlin/Amsterdam/..)
https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/690978730

- We should discuss some short term objectives
- The way we do this initial assessment
- Talk about timing between now and June 21
- The countries we should start with

We will allocated 45 minutes and we will also share some more info between now and Thursday here so we are well prepared to make decisions. :)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

About:
As part of the Digital Agenda Assembly 2012 of the EU Commission, we started this rather massive project to help the EU help businesses to understand, adopt and leverage social media. The anticipated outcome is that growing and economically stable businesses create new jobs and help their respective country to gain more stability as well. Almost a ‘side effect’ is to induce social media in the government as a vehicle to accelerate the dialog between the population and the public sector.

While this project is my brain child, I’m only the guide and collaborate with especially talented and extraordinary people who all work towards a common pan European objective. This is certainly one of the largest crowd sourced strategy initiatives ever done. We are collaborating as a powerful group of highly experienced social media strategists, very ambitious social media enthusiasts and extremely engaged social media practitioner.

Work place:
The primary work of this group is on a open Facebook Group. In this context open means everybody can see what we are doing. In order to contribute, you will need to be approved to join the group. This is also the place where you see who is part of the group.

Digital Agenda 2012 Review:
Objectives (Per EU Commission)
The main objectives of the Assembly are to:

Assess progress to date on implementation towards the Digital Agenda’s goals and actions and seek ways to improve delivery;
Identify challenges ahead for the implementation of the Digital Agenda and for the information society in general;
Mobilise stakeholders’ actions to make further progress and address challenges.
Review :

1) ASSESSMENT

Relative to the previous objectives which where more exploratory, then concrete objectives, it looks like there is quite some good progress in visibility. As stated by the internal web team as well as collaborators with the EU, the internal Web Infrastructure however is rather difficult and not easy to collaborate on.

2) Challenges

I see the three biggest challenges for the Digital Agenda Europe – Social Media in
a) Creating more concrete and measurable objectives
b) Rapidly ramping up the level of social media experience to be able to move from tactical experimentation with the media to a strategic engagement
c) Reviewing the current technology and infrastructure and potentially augmenting it with broadly available social media technology as a work base for all constituencies to collaborate on

3) Future Progress

My engagement and commitment is three fold:
a) Mobilizing capable and experienced stake holders from all EU countries to ensure a sustainable development and leadership for the Digital Agenda (Social Media) as well as leveraging existing high end technology for all constituencies to collaborate with each other and the public.

b) Setting measurable objectives and a defined time frame for a Social Media Strategy that: Stimulate small and medium size businesses and innovative start-ups across the EU leveraging social media to create a sustainable growth, additional jobs and being able to compete in a global market. Specifically we want to double the number of businesses, actively engaged in social media who created new jobs, year over year till 2016.

c) Initiate, lead and execute a Social Media Engagement Strategy to fulfill the above objective by 2016 through crowd sourcing the necessary inputs, programs and actions and leveraging existing expertise helping businesses to thrive, support innovative entrepreneurs create additional jobs and make the public sector more accessible to the population. Success is measured by the number of social media engaged companies who created additional jobs, the measurable increase in social media adoption and the growing number of mentions of said businesses.

The Jazzy Rise of WordPress Weblog and CMS #infographic

WordPress by Jazz Legends, An Infographic About the WP History

WordPress is web software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog. We like to say that WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time. The core software is built by hundreds of community volunteers, and when you’re ready for more there are thousands of plugins and themes available to transform your site into almost anything you can imagine. Over 60 million people have chosen WordPress to power the place on the web they call “home” — we’d love you to join the family.

From the early days of WordPress 1.2, every new release is named by Matt Mullenweg after a Jazz legend, a tradition which has not changed over the years. Fans of Jazz will recognise many artists, release names, but it is easy to forget these and use WordPress release number instead. Matt often has chosen for a sax player, an instrument the WordPress founder also plays.

We looked at the names of every release, the main new features introduced with every major new version as well as the basic analysis of the self-hosted blogging software world that is the WordPress community. We then added ‘WordPress Blue’ and ended up with this infographic for you:

Cheat Sheet of the Anatomy of a WordPress Theme [infographic]

WordPress users may install and switch between themes. Themes allow users to change the look and functionality of a WordPress website or installation without altering the informational content. Themes may be installed by using the WordPress “Dashboard” administration tool, or by uploading theme folders via FTP. The PHP and HTML code in themes can also be edited for more advanced customizations.

With all the WordPress theme frameworks that arose over the past few years, you’d almost forget what a normal WordPress theme looks like. Almost, because Yoast has got your back and we’re about to remind you! Check out our anatomy of a WordPress theme infographic:

Over 60 million people have chosen WordPress to power the place on the web they call “home” — we’d love you to join the family.

If you read any blogs in the world, by now you’ll know WordPress dominates the top 100 blogs in the worldMatt had some interesting comments about that. We’ve seen more WordPress stats, like these by Lorelle. Yoast then started adding more stats on his own.

Yoast asked Experian Hitwise to give some stats about visits to WordPress.org, Drupal.org and Joomla.org in the UK and US, which they did (thanks!). oDesk and Freelancer.com have some great WordPress stats pages and of course there’s a bit of info on WordPress.org itself. So, with all of that and some Yoast is probably forgetting, Design by Soap made the following infographic for him, Yoast hope you like it, if you do, please share it! The Power of WordPress Weblog CMS [Infographic]

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a dynamic content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites.

WordPress is currently the most popular CMS in use on the Internet. It was first released on May 27, 2003, by Matt Mullenweg[1] as a fork of b2/cafelog. As of December 2011, version 3.0 had been downloaded over 65 million times

There is no doubt that we love WordPress on this site, and it is obvious a lot of you do too based on the popularity of last week’s posts and contests. We were curious just how popular WordPress was so we put together gathered the information and put together this infographic to show it. Please enjoy it and feel free to share with others.

WordPress 3.4 Beta 2

met 6 reacties

WordPress

WordPress

WordPress 3.4 Beta 2

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a dynamic content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system.

WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the most popular CMS in use on the Internet

Howdy, folks! Another week, another beta. Since we released Beta 1 last week, we’ve committed more than 60 bug fixes and feature adjustments based on testing and feedback.

If you’ve been testing Beta 1, please update to Beta 2 to make sure things are still working for you. If you are a theme or plugin author and have not yet started testing your code against the 3.4 beta, now’s the perfect time to start. And as always, if you find any bugs, let us know! Full details on testing and bug reporting can be found in last week’s Beta 1 post.

Download WordPress 3.4 Beta 2

WordPress 3.4 is ready for beta testers!

As always, this is software still in development and we don’t recommend that you run it on a production site — set up a test site just to play with the new version. If you break it (find a bug), please report it, and if you’re a developer, try to help us fix it.

If all goes well, we hope to release WordPress 3.4 in May. The more help we get with testing and fixing bugs, the sooner we will be able to release the final version. If you want to be a beta tester, you should check out the Codex article on how to report bugs.

Here’s some of what’s new:

  • Theme Customizer with Previewer
  • Flexible Custom Header Sizes
  • Selecting Custom Header and Background Images from Media Library
  • Better experience searching for and choosing a theme

And some of the under-the-hood changes:

  • New XML-RPC API for external and mobile applications
  • New API for registering theme support for custom headers and backgrounds
  • Performance improvements to WP_Query by splitting the query (Please test!)
  • Internationalization improvements (improved performance and locale support)
  • Performance and API improvements when working with lists of installed themes
  • Support for installing child themes from the WordPress Themes Directory

Remember, if you find something you think is a bug, report it! You can bring it up in the alpha/beta forum, you can email it to the wp-testers list, or if you’ve confirmed that other people are experiencing the same bug, you can report it on the WordPress Core Trac. (We recommend starting in the forum or on the mailing list.)

Theme and plugin authors, if you haven’t been following the 3.4 development cycle, please start now so that you can update your themes and plugins to be compatible with the newest version of WordPress.

SEO Links met WordPress

Automatische SEO Links met WordPress

Automatische SEO Links met WordPress SEO Smart Link

Automatische SEO Links met WordPress SEO Smart Link

SEO Smart Links

SEO WordPress Plugins

SEO WordPress Plugin’s

All in One SEO Pack – One of the most popular plugins ever for WordPress, this plugin does a bit of everything for you from helping choose the best post title and keywords, to helping you avoid duplicate content and more.

Automatic SEO Links – Automatic SEO Links allows you to choose a word or phrase for automatic linking, both internal and external, set anchor text, choose if it should be “nofollow” or not, and more.  One of the best features of this plugin is that it will only do this for the first occurrence of a word in a post so you don’t have to worry about spamming your post with numerous links to the same thing.

Google XML Sitemaps – An essential tool in any blogger’s armory of SEO tools.  While the name only mentions “Google,” this plugin creates an XML-sitemap that can be read by Ask, MSN and Yahoo also.

HeadSpace2 – This plugin allows you to install all sorts of meta-data, add specific JavaScript and CSS to pages, suggests tags for your posts and a whole lot more.

Meta Robots WordPress plugin – An easy solution for adding robot metadata to any page you choose on your blog.  You can use it to make your front page links into “nofollows,” prevent indexing of search pages, disable author and date-based archives, prevent indexing of your login page and numerous other features.

Nofollow Case by Case – This plugin allows you to strip the “nofollow” command from your comments, and then you can apply it to only the comments you don’t wish to support.

Platinum SEO Plugin – The Platinum SEO Plugin offers you such features as automatic 301 redirects for permalink changes, auto-generation of META tags, post slug optimization, help in avoiding duplicate content and a host of other features.

Redirection – For any number of reasons you sometimes need to move a page from one spot on your blog to another, but then you risk losing that page’s status in search results.  Redirection helps you with your 301 redirects, captures a log of 404s so you can work on correcting them, sets up an RSS feed for errors and more.

SEO Blogroll – Do you worry that the people you link to in your blogroll are feeding off of your PageRank?  With SEO Blogroll you can make separate sections for various groupings of links, with an unlimited number in each, and all of them will receive the “nofollow” attribute.

SEO for Paged Comments – With the introduction of paged comments in WordPress 2.7, there was a potential problem with search engines thinking you had duplicate content as the post would appear on each page.  This plugin aims to take care of this issue for you until the folks at WordPress change things up.

SEO friendly and HTML valid subheadings – Some themes for WordPress will confuse your sub-header tags based on the page they are to be displayed on, but this plugin will automatically reset them to make them more SEO friendly by moving them down one spot in the hierarchical tree.  In other words, h2 becomes h3, h3 becomes h4 and so on.

SEO Friendly Images – Images can be a great source of traffic as people search for images of various subjects, and this plugin helps you with making sure that you have “alt” and “title” tags on all of your images so that the search engines can properly index them.

SEO No Duplicate WordPress Plugin – If you must have duplicate content on your site for whatever reason, SEO No Duplicate will allow you to state which version of the post search engines should index while ignoring the others.

SEO Post Link – The post slug is the blog title you see in a browser’s URL bar, and if it’s too long, search engines won’t take a liking to it.  SEO Post Link comes with an already populated list of words to cut from a title when it turns into a URL to make your post addresses that much friendlier.  You can set it so that it’s limited to a certain number of characters, cut short words, cut unnecessary words and more.

SEO Smart Links – Interlinking your blog can be the key to getting more people to read more of your posts, but it is time consuming and tedious to do it by hand.  SEO Smart Links does this for you automatically when you tell it what words to link to what URLs, and it also allows you to set “nofollow” and “open in window” comands for the links.

SEO Tag Cloud Widget – Love ‘em or hate ‘em, a lot of people use tag clouds on their blogs.  Since their inception they have been fairly unreadable by search engines, but with this plugin they will be converted to an SEO-friendly HTML markup that can be indexed.

SEO Title Tag – Your tags are an important part of your site for making sure that search engines know where to place your posts, and SEO Title Tag focuses exclusively on this.  Unlike some other plugins, and WordPress itself, this extension will allow you to add tags to your pages, your main page and even any URL anywhere on your site.

Simple Tags – An extremely popular plugin that focuses on helping you choose the best tags for your posts by offering suggestions, auto-completion of tags as you type, an AJAX admin interface, mass tag editing and a whole lot more.

Sitemap Generator – This is a more customizable sitemap generator than most with options to support multi-level categories and pages, category/page exclusion, permalink support, choices on what to display, options to show number of comments and more.

TGFI.net SEO WordPress Plugin – This particular plugin will do most of the usual SEO work of optimizing titles and keywords, but it adds a unique twist as it is mainly directed at people who use WordPress as a CMS.

Create WordPress Website

While I do have some issues with WordPress, it is one of my favorite CMS tools, because it’s easy to use, manage, and customize. In this post I’m going to give you a bit of insight into how I manage a WordPress website.I’m going to assume you have already chosen the topic for your website.

If you haven’t, you might want to check out this post from SEOMoz to help you. While most people use WordPress as a blogging tool, I prefer to use it as a CMS for magazine or newspaper style site. Why WordPress and not another CMS? It’s easier to administer, easier to get writers to upload and format their own content, and it has RSS and other social tools built in or that can be integrated very easily with plugins.

Keyword Research – You’ll need to do your keyword research. Decide what’s important and divide your content into different categories: evergreen content, primary content, secondary content, head & tail content, current events, and possibly even linkbait/social media content.

Evergreen Content – Some people call it evergreen content, some call it flagship content. Whatever you want to call it, this is the best content your website will have and should be written by your best writer. This will also probably be the most expensive content to produce, so you’ll have to do it in stages. Every time I put a piece of evergreen content up, I use  a plugin like crosslinker to automatically create internal links for specific words. Sure I could create the links manually, but crosslinker saves me time and picks up every instance in the past and any in the future. Little steps like this can reduce your maintenance.

Primary and Secondary Content – Look at your keywords and try to prioritize this content in order of importance. This will help you schedule the content production out over the next few months/years. Sometime I’ll use crosslinker for these posts but sometimes I won’t. It’s a case by case decision.

Head & Tail Content – I’m sure there’s another name for this but that’s what I call it. Let’s say I want to create an article titled “Best Family Friendly Restaurants in New York City.” In that article, chances are good that I’m going to have some editorial content to open and close the article, but the middle will have a brief description highlighting individual restaurants and links to those restaurants.

But what if, instead of  linking to the individual restaurants, I linked to another internal page on my website with a more detailed review of the restaurant? If I wrote each of the individual restaurants (tail pieces) first, then writing the head would be a lot easier. Also if I gave the “head” article a social/linkbait feel it can increase the number of page views, since most social media articles tend to be hit and run type of traffic. As a result, this tactic gets me more bang for my buck.

Current Events – Having an editorial calendar is really a must IMHO. You can keep track of events that affect everyone like national holidays, but you should also include specific things to your vertical, like the Daytona 500 for your racing website. You can also branch out and look for other non traditional tie-ins (maybe a celebrity in your field is a contestant on Dancing With the Stars this year). By knowing what is coming and when, you aren’t living on the edge.

Social Media and Linkbait – While this is a lot more competitive than it was in the past, IMHO it’s still a no-brainer. It’s the most cost effective way of driving links, traffic, and sending social signals that people are visiting your website to search engines like Google. You need to work linkbait into your content creation schedule. Use situations like current events and head and tail creation wherever possible.

If your industry can support it, you can create it as often as once every 1-2 weeks. At the other end of the spectrum once every 2-3 months is the longest I’d let it go. Some websites like Weburbanist go with 100% linkbait. It’s important to find the right time frame that works for you.
