Google introduce Chrome for Android

Google’s rapid growth since its incorporation has triggered a chain of products, acquisitions, and partnerships beyond the company’s core web search engine. The company offers online productivity software, such as the Gmail email service, the Google Docs office suite, and the Google+ social networking service.

In 2008, Google launched Google Chrome to help make the web better. Google is excited that millions of people around the world use Chrome as their primary browser and we want to keep improving that experience.

Today, Google is introducing Chrome for Android Beta, which brings many of the things you’ve come to love about Chrome to your Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phone or tablet.

Like the desktop version, Chrome for Android Beta is focused on speed and simplicity, but it also features seamless sign-in and sync so you can take your personalized web browsing experience with you wherever you go, across devices.

Speed
With Chrome for Android, you can search, navigate and browse fast—Chrome fast. You can scroll through web pages as quickly as you can flick your finger. When searching, your top search results are loaded in the background as you type so pages appear instantly. And of course, both search and navigation can all be done quickly from the Chrome omnibox.

Simplicity
Chrome for Android is designed from the ground up for mobile devices. Google reimagined tabs so they fit just as naturally on a small-screen phone as they do on a larger screen tablet. You can flip or swipe between an unlimited number of tabs using intuitive gestures, as if you’re holding a deck of cards in the palm of your hands, each one a new window to the web.

How to Get More Clicks on Twitter [infographic]

Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, known as “tweets”. It was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched that July.

The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 300 million users as of 2011, generating over 300 million tweets and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day. It has been described as “the SMS of the Internet.

I’ve often said that the best use of Twitter is as a broadcast medium. You should be creating a ton of interesting content and sharing it with your followers. To that end I’ve done a bunch of research on how to optimize the clickthrough rate (CTR) of the links you’re tweeting.

For the purposes of this data, I’ve calculated CTR as the number of clicks on a tweeted link divided by the number of followers the account had when it tweeted that link.

Google SEO Metatag Descriptions

Over de Metatags is veel gezegd, zegt men veel en zal men veel blijven zeggen. Het liefst roept men dingen die interessant zijn of dat in ieder geval lijken. Prachtig onderwerp is de Metatag Description omdat die altijd als zeer belangrijk wordt gezien en omdat we er veel moeite in steken. Tijd om de zaken op een rijtje te zetten. Oftewel: een hoop waarheden en daar voegen wij de onze graag aan toe.

De grote vraag waar iedereen de eigen waarheid op loslaat is of de Metatag Description gelezen wordt. Dit probleem wordt automatisch aan Google verbonden, maar er zijn meer zoekmachines. Facebook groeit snel door naar 700 miljoen

Facebook is een sociaalnetwerksite voor onder anderen scholieren, studenten en werknemers. Sinds mei 2008 bestaat er een Nederlandstalige versie. In december 2008 groeide de site met 600.000 nieuwe aanmeldingen per dag. In april 2009 had Facebook meer dan 200 miljoen actieve gebruikers, vijf maanden later waren dat er 50 miljoen meer. In juli 2010 bediende Facebook al een half miljard gebruikers, circa 7% van het aantal aardbewoners

Facebook groeit snel door naar 700 miljoen

Het gaat nog altijd goed met de groei van Facebook. Deze week zal het sociale netwerk de grens van 700.000.000 doorbreken. Dat komt met name door groei in grote landen als Brazilie, Indonesie, en India. De cijfers werden gerapporteerd door Socialbakers, een onofficieel blog dat zich toelegt op het bijhouden van Facebook statistieken.

De grens van 700 miljoen wordt een stuk sneller behaald dan verwacht. In de genoemde landen is het zogenaamde tipping point een paar maanden geleden bereikt, waarna autonome groei is ontploft. In mei alleen al groeide Facebook met 12% in Brazilie.

Search Engine History [INFOGRAPHIC]

During the early development of the web, there was a list of webservers edited by Tim Berners-Lee and hosted on the CERN webserver. One historical snapshot from 1992 remains. As more webservers went online the central list could not keep up. On the NCSA site new servers were announced under the title “What’s New!”

The very first tool used for searching on the Internet was Archie. The name stands for “archive” without the “v.” It was created in 1990 by Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan and J. Peter Deutsch, computer science students at McGill University in Montreal. The program downloaded the directory listings of all the files located on public anonymous FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites, creating a searchable database of file names; however, Archie did not index the contents of these sites since the amount of data was so limited it could be readily searched manually.

Search Engine History:

The rise of Gopher (created in 1991 by Mark McCahill at the University of Minnesota) led to two new search programs, Veronica and Jughead. Like Archie, they searched the file names and titles stored in Gopher index systems. Veronica (Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Net-wide Index to Computerized Archives) provided a keyword search of most Gopher menu titles in the entire Gopher listings. Jughead (Jonzy’s Universal Gopher Hierarchy Excavation And Display) was a tool for obtaining menu information from specific Gopher servers. While the name of the search engine “Archie” was not a reference to the Archie comic book series, “Veronica” and “Jughead” are characters in the series, thus referencing their predecessor.

In the summer of 1993, no search engine existed yet for the web, though numerous specialized catalogues were maintained by hand. Oscar Nierstrasz at the University of Geneva wrote a series of Perl scripts that would periodically mirror these pages and rewrite them into a standard format which formed the basis for W3Catalog, the web’s first primitive search engine, released on September 2, 1993.

In June 1993, Matthew Gray, then at MIT, produced what was probably the first web robot, the Perl-based World Wide Web Wanderer, and used it to generate an index called ‘Wandex’. The purpose of the Wanderer was to measure the size of the World Wide Web, which it did until late 1995. The web’s second search engine Aliweb appeared in November 1993. Aliweb did not use a web robot, but instead depended on being notified by website administrators of the existence at each site of an index file in a particular format.

JumpStation (released in December 1993) used a web robot to find web pages and to build its index, and used a web form as the interface to its query program. It was thus the first WWW resource-discovery tool to combine the three essential features of a web search engine (crawling, indexing, and searching) as described below. Because of the limited resources available on the platform on which it ran, its indexing and hence searching were limited to the titles and headings found in the web pages the crawler encountered.

One of the first “full text” crawler-based search engines was WebCrawler, which came out in 1994. Unlike its predecessors, it let users search for any word in any webpage, which has become the standard for all major search engines since. It was also the first one to be widely known by the public. Also in 1994, Lycos (which started at Carnegie Mellon University) was launched and became a major commercial endeavor.

Soon after, many search engines appeared and vied for popularity. These included Magellan, Excite, Infoseek, Inktomi, Northern Light, and AltaVista. Yahoo! was among the most popular ways for people to find web pages of interest, but its search function operated on its web directory, rather than full-text copies of web pages. Information seekers could also browse the directory instead of doing a keyword-based search.

In 1996, Netscape was looking to give a single search engine an exclusive deal to be their featured search engine. There was so much interest that instead a deal was struck with Netscape by five of the major search engines, where for $5Million per year each search engine would be in a rotation on the Netscape search engine page. The five engines were Yahoo!, Magellan, Lycos, Infoseek, and Excite.

Search engines were also known as some of the brightest stars in the Internet investing frenzy that occurred in the late 1990s.[9] Several companies entered the market spectacularly, receiving record gains during their initial public offerings. Some have taken down their public search engine, and are marketing enterprise-only editions, such as Northern Light. Many search engine companies were caught up in the dot-com bubble, a speculation-driven market boom that peaked in 1999 and ended in 2001.

Around 2000, the Google search engine rose to prominence.[citation needed] The company achieved better results for many searches with an innovation called PageRank. This iterative algorithm ranks web pages based on the number and PageRank of other web sites and pages that link there, on the premise that good or desirable pages are linked to more than others. Google also maintained a minimalist interface to its search engine. In contrast, many of its competitors embedded a search engine in a web portal.

By 2000, Yahoo was providing search services based on Inktomi’s search engine. Yahoo! acquired Inktomi in 2002, and Overture (which owned AlltheWeb and AltaVista) in 2003. Yahoo! switched to Google’s search engine until 2004, when it launched its own search engine based on the combined technologies of its acquisitions.

Microsoft first launched MSN Search in the fall of 1998 using search results from Inktomi. In early 1999 the site began to display listings from Looksmart blended with results from Inktomi except for a short time in 1999 when results from AltaVista were used instead. In 2004, Microsoft began a transition to its own search technology, powered by its own web crawler (called msnbot).

Microsoft’s rebranded search engine, Bing, was launched on June 1, 2009. On July 29, 2009, Yahoo! and Microsoft finalized a deal in which Yahoo! Search would be powered by Microsoft Bing technology.

Alexa Internet is een in Californië gevestigd dochterbedrijf van Amazon.com, en is het bekendst door haar website die informatie ter beschikking stelt over het internetverkeer naar andere websites.

Geschiedenis
Alexa Internet werd opgericht in 1996 door Brewster Kahle en Bruce Gilliat, gesteund door Jacqui Safra’s Etoile Investments, als een commerciële toepassing van de vzw Internet Archive.

Alexa Internet creëerde een toepassing voor het genereren van verwante internetpagina’s gebaseerd op het surfgedrag van internetgebruikers. Deze toepassing kan gebruikt worden op webbrowsers zoals Internet Explorer en Netscape Navigator. Ingenieurs van Alexa hebben de Wayback Machine van Alexa ontworpen. Alexa voorziet Internet Archive ook van web crawls.

In 1999 werd Alexa opgekocht door Amazon.com voor ongeveer $250 miljoen.

Alexa verzamelt informatie over gebruik van het web via de Alexa Toolbar. Dit laat hen toe statistieken te voorzien over internetverkeer, en voor een bepaalde webbladzijde verwante pagina’s te tonen. Deze toepassing heeft een slechte reputatie bij anti-spyware programma’s omdat het informatie over zoekgewoontes verzamelt.

Via de site van Alexa kan je voor een bepaalde website verwante pagina’s en gegevens over hun internetverkeer opvragen. Alexa begon in de lente van 2002 samen te werken met Google, en met het Open Directory Project in januari 2003. Windows Live Search verving Google als een bron van zoekresultaten in mei 2006. Vandaag is Alexa een op Windows Live Search-gebaseerde zoekmachine, een internet gids gebaseerd op Open Directory, en een bron van informatie over het verkeer naar specifieke websites. Alexa voorziet ook “site info” voor de A9.com zoekmachine en voor Alexadex.com.

In december 2005 stelde Alexa haar uitgebreide zoekindex en webcrawler-faciliteiten open voor andere programma’s door middel van een uitgebreide set van internet diensten en toepassingsinterface’s. Deze zouden bijvoorbeeld gebruikt kunnen worden voor bijvoorbeeld verticale zoekmachines te ontwikkelen die actief zijn vanop Alexa’s eigen servers, of elders.

Alexa’s rangschikking van internetpagina’s
Alexa rangschikt websites op basis van bezoeken van gebruikers van de Alexa Toolbar, die enkel beschikbaar is voor Internet Explorer en manueel moet geïnstalleerd worden. Er is controverse over hoe representatief die gebruikers zijn voor de doorsnee internetgebruiker. Als zij representatief zouden zijn voor de populatie van internetgebruikers zou de rangschikking redelijk nauwkeurig zijn. In de realiteit zorgt deze manier van werken echter voor afwijkende trends te wijten aan een voorgeselecteerde doelgroep. Alexa erkent dit.

Als een gevolg van al deze factoren zullen bepaalde sites erg laag terecht komen in de rangschikking, bijvoorbeeld als hun bezoekers veel andere browsers dan IE gebruiken, Mac OS gebruiken, enzovoort. Hetzelfde geldt voor sites die bezorgd zijn over privacy en werken met https.

Komt daarbij dat de populatie in deze steekproef erg klein is in vergelijking met het totaal aantal surfers, waardoor bijvoorbeeld sites met weinig internetverkeer compleet in de rangschikking kunnen ontbreken. Een andere bezorgheid is dat de rangschikking makkelijk te manipuleren is. Webmasters kunnen de Alexa ranking van minder populaire sites significant verbeteren door hun site op hun browser in te stellen als startpagina en de Toolbar te installeren.

Alexa is wat de meeste sites betreft echter een belangrijke, nuttige en (meestal) onafhankelijke bron van informatie over internetverkeer. We weten zeker dat het verkeer niet minder is dan Alexa aangeeft, maar het kan veel meer zijn, omdat een groot deel van de surfers niet in rekening wordt gebracht. Jammer genoeg wordt de rangschikking van Alexa vaak verkeerd geïnterpreteerd als een exacte of benaderende weergave van de populariteit van websites.

De definitie van de Alexa traffic rank

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.

The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users)

Founded in April 1996, Alexa Internet grew out of a vision of Web navigation that is intelligent and constantly improving with the participation of its users. Along the way Alexa has developed an installed based of millions of toolbars, one of the largest Web crawls and an infrastructure to process and serve massive amounts of data.

For users of Alexa’s Toolbar and web site this has resulted in products that have revolutionized Web navigation and intelligence. For developers this has resulted in a set of tools unprecedented in scope allowing whole new services to be created on the Alexa data and platform.

Google Universal Search maakt het makkelijker om te ranken

Google maakt steeds meer gebruik van Universal Search. Hierdoor krijgen gebruikers niet het bekende rijtje met 10 resultaten voorgeschoteld maar ook videos, afbeeldingen, nieuws en lokale resultaten. Dit betekend dat je veel meer kansen heb om gevonden te worden.

Videos
Niet alleen de videos van Youtube worden weergeven in de zoekresultaten maar ook videos van andere video community’s. Tevens worden ook video getoond die zelf worden gehost op je website. Video is een erg goede manier om content te delen met de wereld, maak hier dus zeker gebruik van. Ik raad je aan om je video te hosten op Youtube.

Youtube is de 2e grootste zoekmachine van de wereld, dus de kans dat je video op youtube wordt gevonden is ook nog eens erg groot. Ook is het noodzakelijk dat je je videos voor Youtube weer optimaliseer, hier ga in binnenkort meer over vertellen in een aparte post.

Afbeeldingen
Veel mensen optimaliseren hun afbeeldingen niet goed voor Google. Gebruik voor het optimaliseren van je afbeeldingen een goede alt tekst. Ook moet de naam van de afbeelding een goed keyword bevatten. Google waardeer het ook als er om de afbeelding tekst staat die aan de afbeelding is gerelateerd. Een goed voorbeeld van een afbeelding in een tekst die over SEO boek gaat zou er zo uit kunnen zien;

Nieuws
Als je een website heb waar veel nieuws items worden geplaatst dan is het zeker de moeite waard om je aan te melden bij Google news. Je heb hiervoor “minimaal 3″ redacteurs nodig die aantoonbaar zijn op de website.

Lokale zoekopdrachten
Ben je nog niet aangemeld bij Google  places ( Google bedrijvencentrum ) dan zou ik dat maar eens gaan doen. Bij lokale zoekopdrachten word er in de meeste gevallen een kaartje getoond met de 10 meest relevante bedrijven in de branche. Inmiddels zijn er al weer meer ranking factors van Google places bekend, maar hier ga ik binnenkort meer over vertellen in een aparte post.

Doordat Universal Search steeds vaker wordt toegepast door google in de Nederlandse zoekmachine is de gemiddelde tijd van de bezoekers langer geworden. Dit komt o.a. omdat de gebruik verder kijkt dan bij een normaal rijtje van 10 resultaten. Via eyetracking  is dit verschil duidelijk te zien.  Lees hier verder…

Search-Rankingfactoren, Het is tot op vandaag grotendeels onduidelijk hoe zoekmachines zoals Google precies hun zoekresultatenvolgorde (SERP) bepalen. Door diverse SEO professionals is een poging ondernomen om al die search ranking factors te ordenen naar importantie (door een verwacht gewicht aan elke veronderstelde factor toe te kennen) om zodoende een hoger niveau zoekmachine optimalisatie te kunnen leveren.

15 TOP Twitter SEO Tips and Tools

Twitter is a website, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and microblogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users’ messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user’s profile page.

Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other users’ tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers.

All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, compatible external applications (such as for smartphones), or by Short Message Service (SMS) available in certain countries. While the service is free, accessing it through SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

01) Choose a Twitter handle strategically – Twitter handle, which can be your name, company name, brand name, blog name and so on. While choose a twitter handle (your username) make sure it is relevant to your blog or website and is easy to remember as it is the part of the SEO title for the tweets appearing in Google search engine. For example if you are running iPhone blog then you can probably use twitter handle starting with iPhone.

02) Boost your Twitter Profile Page Rank

• Optimize your meta description - Your Twitter ‘bio’, is actually your meta description. Make sure to include keywords.
• Display web site’s URL – Do not forget to display URL of your blog or website prominently on your twitter profile page. This will eventually increase the organic traffic as people often click the URL for seeking more information. It is important to note that this link does not provide any SEO link juice due to a “Nofollow” attribute in place.
• Optimize your page description - Use target keywords on your profile page and make sure to use keywords in your Tweets.
• Create inbound links - Just post articles with an anchor text link to your Twitter profile on article syndication sites. This strategy helps in boosting your profile’s page rank.
• Direct relationship between followers and profile PageRank - If you have lots of followers you will be popular among twitter users, which will eventually boost page rank of your profile page.
• Place Twitter profile Link in footer or sidebar, which is accessible via every page.

03) Follow Related Theme Profiles Only – Search engines increases your twitter profile link juice when you are able to get followers from good PR twitter profiles. Make sure that you add only those twitter users that are related to your blog content or share tweets on similar interest. This will increase number of retweets and thereby traffic.

04) Use 301 permanent redirect, while shortening URL – TinyURL, bit.ly, tr.im are popular URL shortening services that redirect users to the real URL via 301 (permanent redirect) and provide backlinks to your content. Search engines do not index TinyURLs, but index and pass PageRank to the actual URLs instead.

05) Use desired keywords in tweet content – Twitter does not allow you to tweet for more than 140 characters. Instead of automatically shortening the links on twitter.com, it is strongly advised to use URL shortening service like bit.ly. Once your URL is shortened, you have much more space to include more target keyword into twitter content. 

06) SEO Optimize Title of Tweets in Twitter – The most important part of your post for keyword/SEO consideration is the first 27 characters. It’s this first part that becomes part of the <TITLE> on your Twitter static pages. Twitter uses the following <TITLE> format:

Twitter / Your Username: 27 Characters …

The same SEO rules that you apply to write optimized titles for the post must be used for twitter tweets as well. The only difference is that you have a restriction of 27 Characters as compared to 65 Characters in Blog Posts. For optimized tweets use keyword rich Titles within first 27 characters.

07) Use Hashtags in Tweets – Hashtags are similar to keyword meta-data. Basically, these are tags that that help those who seek similar content discover your Tweets. They’re like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. Hashtags are created by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag. This will help the visitors to view your tweet around a particular topic. To search most recent and hot hashtags visit #hashtags.org. Alternatively, you can use Twemes.com to find new hashtags.

08) Retweet Startegy – An indexed tweet provides 27 characters or so for title post excluding ‘Twitter / Your Username: ‘

Make sure your tweet’s character limits allow for optimal retweets. It is important to keep the tweet under 125 characters, allowing your followers to add “RT @yourname” in front of the tweet. If you retweet the retweeted tweet it will result into the following link-

Twitter / Berrie Pelser: RT @Username RT @Username RT @Use ...

The original <title> of the Tweet is now truncated, with no keyword in place. To show link love some of us delete all the “RT @yourname”  text before retweeting into the Twitter Network. But it is not advisable, as the strategy could have adverse impact on your twitter profile pagerank. Instead you can add the RT @Username at the end of the Retweeted content.

09) Tweet in order to get your article retweeted – This is the most important part for getting huge twitter traffic. In order to get more traffic and relevance to your tweet make sure that you retweets, other blog articles and encourage others twitter users to share (retweet) your Twitter content. Keep in mind the Retweet strategy discussed above.

10) Tweet and retweet relevant content timely – Make sure you are tweeting and retweeting articles keeping your followers and blog content in mind. If you are hosting a blog on windows 7 and tweets on windows 7 and H1N1 Tips simultaneously, then Google search engine may not love your twitter profile. This exercise may result in decrease in number of followers as well. Only share the links when you feel it should be, do not spam the twitter. source: gadgetsdna.com

11) Ranking with your profile on Google sounds simpler than it is. What do you want to rank for? You can’t rank easily for different keywords. I rank for Tad Chef with my profile. What about onreact though, my older nick name or brand? I had to set up another Twitter account to rank for onreact as onreact_com is considered by Google to be onreactcom.

In the end I added 4 extra accounts that cover the most common terms associated with me. Also Twitter outranks me for my Tad Chef. So one day I might want to change that be de-optimizing it actually. List are a good tool to cover more terms. You can add only yourself or your employees if you like too. A list called “seo london” will probably succeed rather than one called just seo.

12 ) Ranking organically with tweets largely depends on the keyword usage and what comes first in your tweet. You don’t want to rank for [RT @andy RT @bill RT @chris] so make sure you add the users you retweet at the end with a blog-like [via @andy @bill #chris]. Also you should add some meaningful tags: #seo is fine for Twitter but something more exact like #twitterseo might be better findable and more accurate.

13) etting found in Twitter search is not really desirable if you ask me. The results are messy and lack focus. Even the so called “popular” results on top are barely relevant. People still use this search in spite of better alternatives like Topsy etc. though. Scheduling recurring tweets might be a good idea here. Don’t spam though. I think more than 4 tweets a day is too much. Lots of Twitter tools support scheduled tweets. HootSuite and CoTweet for example do.

14) Making tweets spread virally is perhaps the most important discipline of Twitter SEO. The other stuff is very basic. Add popular terms and keywords to your twet to make people retweet. Words like “free”, “tips”, “tools” etc., brands like “Google”, “Apple” everybody cares for and something that makes a tweeet stand out like “OMG!”, “WTF?” or a number.

Of course the link you tweet or the message must be worth retweeting. In case it isn’t nobody will retweet it. Tweets about Twitter, technology, social media, business that are helpful for most users will get more popular that tweets about niche topics like SEO. Humor is also key. Even SEO jokes are quite popular.

15) Entering Google results via realtime search is easy once you’re tweet has become viral but it sometimes also helps to tweet your link from more than one account and more than one time. For instance we at SEOptimise tweet from the company account first, then in most cases the boss himself, Kevin will retweet the link and I will post it again or retweet as an author.

As our postings have considerable value the rest is done by other regular users. Don’t forget that many Twitter accounts are mostly useless bots that retweet automatically based on keywords: Nobody clicks those links. They may show up in Google though as it doesn’t really filter tweets.

These Twitter SEO best practices are neither SEO secrets nor controversial. Everybody serious about Twitter SEO tweets that way. Other people don’t mind but if you’re using Twitter for business reasons should do more than just click and run. Make sure to act accordingly to perform better in search be it Google or Twitter or third party tools like Topsy.

Understanding how users find, see, and interact with your website is a great way to improve your content, design, and navigation. Understanding your site will help you craft a better user experience. There are several tools on the web that can expose telling data about your site. Below are 5 tools which will help you analyze your site.

Code Validation

The foundation for every website is fundamentally sound source code. Unfortunately programmers aren’t always the most meticulous type of people. They’d rather hash out the difficult stuff and leave the details to someone else, and that’s where code validation comes in. To make sure your website’s source code and features are fully functional you should run it through the following validation tests.

1. WDG HTML Validator – Excellent tool for identifying syntax errors on pages driven by markup languages. Also has an option to recursively check for errors on every page in the website directory.
2. W3C Markup Validation Service – Traverses HTML and XHTML markup for syntax errors. Boasts the title of first (and most used) HTML validator on the internet.
3. W3C CSS Validation Service – Checks CSS documents for errors in source code. Also gives warnings for code that doesn’t exhibit the best design practices; e.g. “Same colors for color and background-color in two contexts.”
4. RUWF? XML Syntax Checker – Checks for malformed data in XML documents.
5. W3C Feed Validation Service – Checks the syntax of Atom and RSS feeds for errors.
6. W3C Link Checker – Searches for and identifies broken links. Specifically checks that all the links are dereferenceable, no links and anchors are defined twice and warns about invalid http and directory redirects.
7. Juicy Studio Link Analyser – Tests the links on a page for Urls that resolve successfully. Works similar to W3C Link Checker.

Accessibility

All too often we see webmasters designing websites that focus on looking attractive while completely failing to consider the impact of visitor accessibility. Unfortunately, an ineffective or difficult to navigate website is certain to fail, no matter how attractive it is. To make sure your visitors are getting the information they need (and thus becoming repeat visitors), your website should follow various WCAG and section 508 accessibility guidelines.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings.

In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.

The acronym “SEO” can refer to “search engine optimizers,” a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign.

Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems, images, videos, shopping carts, and other elements that have been optimized for the purpose of search engine exposure.

Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, uses methods such as link farms, keyword stuffing and article spinning that degrade both the relevance of search results and the user-experience of search engines. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques in order to remove them from their indices.

Facebook Marketing Impact of Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social media is no longer a stop-and-go investment, but rather a long term strategic channel that, when integrated with other marketing efforts, allows brands to connect with users over time.

Results of a recent survey we conducted find social media efforts valuable in their ability to grow brand awareness and increase dialogue with customers. In addition to spending more time thinking about how to engage audiences, marketers will soon begin to measure social media’s impact on the business through a more traditional ROI definition: attributable sales and costs.

Facebook Marketing Impact of Social Media

Facebook is still the dominant social network in terms of marketing, but Twitter is narrowing the gap, according to a return-on-investment survey of more than 700 marketers conducted recently by social media management platform Wildfire Interactive.

A total of 94 percent of respondents use Facebook in their social media marketing efforts, according to Wildfire, but Twitter was not far behind, at 74 percent.

Other options paled in comparison:

• Blogs, 41 percent;
• LinkedIn, 32 percent;
• YouTube, 30 percent; and
• Other, six percent.

In addition, Wildfire reported that almost 70 percent of marketers surveyed believe Facebook fans are of more value to them than non-fans, and the top three reasons they cited were:

• New customer recruitment, 44 percent;
• Higher conversion rates, 18 percent; and
• More frequent purchases, 18 percent.

You may use one, two or three of these plugins but not more. The true SEO for blogs is more advanced. On the other hand you don’t need some advanced technical skill-set to master it.

Much of blog SEO is directly related to

• interlinking
• keyword choice
• content prioritization (siloing)
• community creation

You may cover the SEO basics or use the “best SEO plugins” but still write content nobody will ever find. So what’s the deal? How do you really take care of your blog and WordPress SEO? I’ve seen countless WordPress SEO tutorials but most don’t cover any of the following 30 points most bloggers overlook:

Strategic Ranking

Google loves blogs and fresh content. Blogs offer everything Google needs so it rewards blogs and publishing new posts frequently. On the other hand you will notice that your blog ranks often in random ways unless you decide what blog posts and what keywords and phrases you want to rank for. With the several blogs I write for I often notice this kind of behavior. You have to prioritize and decide yourself which posts you wan to rank. In SEO it’s often referred to as siloing.

Outdated posts may rank forever.
So you have to return to those posts and update them for better SEO results. You may also redirect your old posts to new URLs but I prefer the update.

New posts often rank far worse than old posts.
Thus you have to update the old posts sometimes instead of writing new ones on the same topic.

More keyword posts don’t automatically mean better rankings for those keywords.
Adding “UK SEO” to each an every post doesn’t mean you will rank better for UK SEO. Rather focus on the best performing post about UK SEO on your blog.

Tag pages might outrank your posts.
Adding a tag cloud to your blog is good for usability and still common. Your tag or category pages might outrank your posts though as they are always linked on homepage. Tag pages make people bounce though. So don’t link your tags and categories everywhere.

Nobody finds your best posts unless you mark them as “best”.
Usability guru Jakob Nielsen has written about it years ago. You have to add a best posts, featured posts and/or most popular posts list to your blog. We use Postrank for that purpose.

You won’t rank for “x blog” unless you have “x blog” in your HTML title.
Google is still too stupid to recognize a blog by it’s set up or structure. Using WordPress doesn’t mean you will rank for your term + blog. Just search for design blog. You have to call yourself blog in the HTML title tag an dthe h1 headline. Doesn’t seem “advanced”? It took a me more than a year to finally prove that.

Strategic Linking

Link building in advanced SEO is not only about getting links. It’s also about how each link is part of your overall SEO strategy. Do you aim to rank for your main keyphrase or two? Or do you seek to become a great resource first and make each post rank as high as possible to harness the long tail? This decision determines how you will link out, link your internal posts and interlink them in future.

People click the first link in lists.
It doesn’t matter how you structure your list, whether it starts with “a” or the best list item. People tend to click the items on top. Consider this when compiling link lists.

Only first anchor text counts.
This might seem counterintuitive but Google apparently only counts your first anchor text in a page when you link the same page twice. So

Repetitive linking with the same anchor text is spammy.
While many SEO plugins automatically link a given page or post on your WordPress blog with a predefines keyword this is spammy. Google discounts unnatural accumulations of anchor texts like it discounts keyword stuffing elsewhere. It’s not 2005 anymore.

Broken links break your SEO and make less trustworthy.
Both users and search engines rely on trust factors like you not linking to bad neighbourhoods. Often old blog posts link to sites that do not exist anymore or worse have been overtaken by someone else and are more or less of low quality

You get no links without trust.
When it comes to business blogging most blogs won’t get authority links unless they become trusted resources. There are a few desperate people out there like Jason Calacanis who will attack a whole industry to get links but that doesn’t work for you. You are not a celebrity. Only people who trust you link to you.

You get incoming links by linking out (I don’t mean trackbacks).
Many people new to blog SEO assume that they have to hoard PageRank like they do on their static sites but only blogs that link out succeed in the long run. You get links mostly from other bloggers. How do they notice you? When you actually link out to them. Getting links with trackbacking everybody via automated plugins is spam.

Nofollow hampers your internal links (pings) as well.
WordPress still uses by default the so called nofollow attribute for blog comments. It was introduced to combat spam but it never did. The widely used Akismet plugin is for spam. WordPress also adds your nofollow internal links (pings) and thus hurts your site. Otherwise you can just ping your older posts by linking them in your newer post and both of them get a ranking boost.

Content Strategy

Content creation is not just about producing as many blog posts as possible and blog SEO is not about making these posts as keyword rich as possible. You need a content strategy and goals you want to reach. Also who re the people you want to reach with your blog posts? Think about that before you start blogging. Do you blog for branding, SEO or do you seek feedback from your readers?

Normal people or websites rarely link out to blogs, others bloggers do.
So you have to write for a relatively small audience of other bloggers to get links. Make sure to address other bloggers in your posts at least from time to time. Write for people, I mean people you know by name to achieve this.

Images rank far easier than postings.
SEO is still a niche topic. As SEO blogs are fairly well optimized also the images in them rank well. You may end up with more visitors from image search than from regular results. This works great for other more image oriented blogs as well. Descriptive image names and captions are key here. angelina-jolie-naked.jpg with “Angelina Jolie naked” as a caption will outrank 123.jpg with “look at her” as caption.

Listicles bring traffic but in depth posts like Seth Godin’s bring reputation (and traffic).
As an SEOptimise reader you know we produce quite a few lists. These lists are very popular. To get a reputation and trust you need to cover topics in depth though. Some lists manage both, like I hope this one does but random shallow collections of items aka listicles don’t.

Embedding videos from YouTube or elsewhere is a recipe for disaster
Many US bloggers forget that the world is bigger than the USA. They will embed videos hosted on video sites to  their blog posts. Sometimes the video is the only content in a post like that. Many videos can’t be displayed outside the US, even the most popular ones. Some sites like Hulu are US only. Some videos get removed for copyright reasons, other for personal reasons. So you end up with an empty player in your blog post. Use open source video players for your professional blogs.

Comments and Community

Your goal with a blog is also to create a community of supporters for your blog, site as a whle and brand. Blogs and comments are the most straightforward way to do so. Comments are very tricky though. There are many pitfalls to overcome, especially when it comes to blog comments and SEO. Disabling comments is no solution though for flagship business blogs.

Unmoderated comments may hurt your site’s authority.
You have to moderate comments very closely. That is: Check the name of the commenter, is it just keywords. Read the comment, check whether it’s original (or just a bit that copies the same comment from elsewhere or even from your blog comments above), click the link the commenter added. In case everything is OK then the comment should be approved. Otherwise it might make you look bad for both users and search engines.

Comments make your posts rank better, not only for long tail phrases.
Stale blog posts may outrank you but also may dissappear altogether. When people still add comments to old blog posts Google obviously assumes that they are still of relecvance. Also people add more contant via comments and thus you can rank for long tail phrases and often even quite popular keyphrases just becaus of the comments.

Switched off comments make your blog a one way street.
Many bloggers consider switching off comments altogether to get rid of spam, low quality comments and to have more time for writing. While the advantages of this approach might be obvious the drawbacks are a bit more long term and fuzzy but they are there. The conversation takes place somewhere else. You lose a community or the community you once had.

Using third party tools like Disqus for comments makes them unmovable.
Many bloggers use third party comment management tools like Disqus make them stuck once you move your blog to another platform for instance. When the URLs change the comments can’t be ascribed correctly to their posts anymore.

Relying for Twitter for comments breaks them when Twitter is down.
Some bloggers do not use third party commenting tools but add Twitter authentication via OAuth. This is a good idea as long as Twitter is up. Just yesterday I couldn’t add a comment to a blog because Twitter was “over capacity”. Make sure Twitter is not the only way people can authenticate or allow comments by anonymous users as well. You can make those

Most people don’t comment.
99% of visitors do not comment on your blog. So pay special attention to those that do but don’t assume everybody else shares the same opinion. Also consider adding low threshold user participation to your blog. Something like adding stars for approval.

Most positive comments are spam these days.
“Thank you, great post!” This is not a comment. This is spam. Whenever I see a blog post full of such comments I know that the blogger in question doesn’t care about real comments so I don’t comment myself. I don’t want my comment to get buried below dozens of worthless bot like flattery. Also note that a comment providing no context and no relation to the actual post can be automated.

You have to reply to good commenters to keep your blog community alive.
While most comments are trash you have to try to keep the commenters who are really adding value by commenting on point. These people are your most ardent fans in many cases. They are your brand evangelists who will spread the message beyond your blog. Nurture them and your blog SEO will thrive.

Conversions and ROI

Blogs are not meant to convert visitors to clients. Also the ROI of blogging is fuzzy. You need to make a blog work for you and your business. Just adding a blog and assuming you get more conversions or a better ROI than before doesn’t work. So make sure to find out how your blog could earn money for you. Think about ways to convert your readers to subscribers, brand evangelists or even clients that are specific to your business. Each and every blog I write for has a different way of earning money.

The date makes people bounce.
Blogs, especially WordPress blogs still mimic diaries like back in 2001. So people will see the date of a post almost instantly in the URL or above the post itself. While hiding the date entirely is not a good idea showing it before the actual post as the most important information is a mistake. People will assume that your content is outdated when they see a date from a few months ago or last year. Business blogging is about value though, thus you won’t just blog time sensitive news. Display the date at the bottom of the post without highlighting it. Otherwise visitors just bounce.

Blogs do not convert unless you make them.
We know that there are basically three kinds of search queries. Navigational, informational and transactional ones. Blogs are geared towards serving the informational queries. People who get the information have no reason to stay on your blog and buy, subscribe etc. You have to blog for conversions to get them. This starts with choosing different keywords and placing a call to action at the bottom of your post.

Blogging doesn’t pay when it’s a shop window with no products.
The term business blogging suggests that blogging itself is the business. In most cases it is not. blogging only supports your real business. It’s like s shop window for showing off your expertise. In case there is nothing to buy though, no products you won’t sell anything.

You can perform A/B split tests with WordPress.
A/B split testing or multivariate testing is very en vogue these days even beyond the SEO industry. It is for good reason. You can optimize for the traffic you already have instead of trying to get even more of it. A/B split testing works in WordPress as well and can increase your conversion rates significantly.

You have to segment your blog traffic to achieve the best results.
When you study your analytics often enough you will notice that your visitors are often completely different. You have probably very determined search users, very casual social media users, and very devoted returning visitors if your blog works well. To achieve the best results and convert these visitors you have to segment them. It means you need to offer different things to different people. Example: Show targeted CPC ads to search visitors. Show CPM ads to social media visitors. Don’t show ads to regular visitors or special offers instead.

Het nut van een 404 pagina

Elke site kent één of meerdere pagina’s die er niet (meer) zijn maar die wel worden geraadpleegd. Iemand heeft ze gebookmarkt of typt het adres verkeerd in. Een verwijzing is niet goed overgenomen in een e-mail of er staat een link naar de verwijderde pagina op een andere site. De pagina kan ook nog verschijnen als zoekresultaat in Google.

Elke site laat dan een niet gevonden melding zien, een zogenaamde 404 pagina. Omdat hier weinig aandacht aan wordt besteed is de pagina vaak doelloos. De eigenaar van een site weet niet van het bestaan of is zich niet bewust van het belang hiervan. Wat is precies het nut van een 404 pagina? En hoe geven we aan deze melding extra attentiewaarde?

Hoe wordt er nu omgegaan met een niet gevonden melding?
Volgens 404 Error pages leidt gemiddeld 7% van de bezoeken aan een site naar een 404 pagina. Op basis van de webstatistieken die ik te zien krijg, lijkt me dit percentage aan de hoge kant. Het precieze aantal is sterk afhankelijk van het karakter van een site; bijvoorbeeld het aantal keren dat er een update wordt geplaatst.  Lees hier verder…

Alexa is een erg groot internet informatie bedrijf wat in 1996 is opgericht. Alexa is op een dagelijkse basis websites aan het rankschikken. Met de data die ze verzamelen bieden ze een aantal interessante features en services aan, zoals:

Alexa verzamelt 1600 gigabytes aan web content per dag. Alexa heeft nu 4,5 miljard pagina in haar bestand van 16 miljoen websites.

De definitie van de Alexa traffic rank

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.

The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users)
