About:
As part of the Digital Agenda Assembly 2012 of the EU Commission, we started this rather massive project to help the EU help businesses to understand, adopt and leverage social media. The anticipated outcome is that growing and economically stable businesses create new jobs and help their respective country to gain more stability as well. Almost a ‘side effect’ is to induce social media in the government as a vehicle to accelerate the dialog between the population and the public sector.
While this project is my brain child, I’m only the guide and collaborate with especially talented and extraordinary people who all work towards a common pan European objective. This is certainly one of the largest crowd sourced strategy initiatives ever done. We are collaborating as a powerful group of highly experienced social media strategists, very ambitious social media enthusiasts and extremely engaged social media practitioner.
Work place:
The primary work of this group is on a open Facebook Group. In this context open means everybody can see what we are doing. In order to contribute, you will need to be approved to join the group. This is also the place where you see who is part of the group.
Digital Agenda 2012 Review:
Objectives (Per EU Commission)
The main objectives of the Assembly are to:
Assess progress to date on implementation towards the Digital Agenda’s goals and actions and seek ways to improve delivery;
Identify challenges ahead for the implementation of the Digital Agenda and for the information society in general;
Mobilise stakeholders’ actions to make further progress and address challenges.
Review :
1) ASSESSMENT
Relative to the previous objectives which where more exploratory, then concrete objectives, it looks like there is quite some good progress in visibility. As stated by the internal web team as well as collaborators with the EU, the internal Web Infrastructure however is rather difficult and not easy to collaborate on.
2) Challenges
I see the three biggest challenges for the Digital Agenda Europe – Social Media in
a) Creating more concrete and measurable objectives
b) Rapidly ramping up the level of social media experience to be able to move from tactical experimentation with the media to a strategic engagement
c) Reviewing the current technology and infrastructure and potentially augmenting it with broadly available social media technology as a work base for all constituencies to collaborate on
3) Future Progress
My engagement and commitment is three fold:
a) Mobilizing capable and experienced stake holders from all EU countries to ensure a sustainable development and leadership for the Digital Agenda (Social Media) as well as leveraging existing high end technology for all constituencies to collaborate with each other and the public.
b) Setting measurable objectives and a defined time frame for a Social Media Strategy that: Stimulate small and medium size businesses and innovative start-ups across the EU leveraging social media to create a sustainable growth, additional jobs and being able to compete in a global market. Specifically we want to double the number of businesses, actively engaged in social media who created new jobs, year over year till 2016.
c) Initiate, lead and execute a Social Media Engagement Strategy to fulfill the above objective by 2016 through crowd sourcing the necessary inputs, programs and actions and leveraging existing expertise helping businesses to thrive, support innovative entrepreneurs create additional jobs and make the public sector more accessible to the population. Success is measured by the number of social media engaged companies who created additional jobs, the measurable increase in social media adoption and the growing number of mentions of said businesses.

Recentelijk introduceerde Google de ‘Instant Preview’-feature: het tonen van een kleine afbeelding van de betreffende webpagina naast het zoekresultaat. Zo kun je zonder op het zoekresultaat te klikken, al zien of de website je bevalt. Overigens niet te verwarren met Google Instant, dat de zoekresultaten ververst terwijl je je zoekterm aan het intypen bent.
Sindsdien is me al diverse malen gevraagd wat Google Instant Preview voor effect gaat hebben op het gebied van usability. Worden organisaties nu gedwongen om meer te investeren in een goed design? Is het nodig om de opbouw van je pagina aan te passen, zodat hij zo goed mogelijk in het previewvenster naar voren komt?
Nee hoor, maak je niet druk… Want wat is het geval: de previews verschijnen pas nadat je klikt op het vergrootglas-icoontje naast een zoekresultaat. Vanaf dat moment wordt bij alle zoekresultaten een preview getoond. Maar het is de vraag hoeveel gebruikers dit zullen aanzetten.

Social media technologies take on many different forms including magazines, Internet forums, weblogs, social blogs, microblogging, wikis, podcasts, photographs or pictures, video, rating and social bookmarking. By applying a set of theories in the field of media research (social presence, media richness) and social processes (self-presentation, self-disclosure) Kaplan and Haenlein created a classification scheme for different social media types in their Business Horizons article published in 2010.
According to Kaplan and Haenlein there are six different types of social media: collaborative projects (e.g., Wikipedia), blogs and microblogs (e.g., Twitter), content communities (e.g., YouTube), social networking sites (e.g., Facebook), virtual game worlds (e.g., World of Warcraft), and virtual social worlds (e.g. Second Life). Technologies include: blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, crowdsourcing and voice over IP, to name a few. Many of these social media services can be integrated via social network aggregation platforms.
This infographic, “Leveraging Social Media to Showcase Your Expertise”, was produced by Zintro, a business network that connects clients with experts in a variety of business area, to respond to this looming question. It not only provides statistical differences among the four social media sites, but also information about how each site applies to business needs.

A smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile computing platform, with more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a feature phone. What will smartphones look like in five years? Or ten? What sort of amazing things will they be able to do?
Flexible designs, augmented reality, quad-core processors, and even some artificial intelligence are just a few of the features you can expect smartphones to have in the next five to ten years.

IBM komt met software voor Google Health
IBM komt met software voor Google Health waarmee burgers zelf nieuwe medische data, zoals bloeddruk en hartslag, kunnen toevoegen. Met de nieuwe software moet de online dienst Google Health verbeteren. Burgers kunnen de data zoals bloeddruk en suikerwaarden invoeren in hun persoonlijke bestand. Deze informatie is volgens Google hiermee een stuk overzichtelijker, uitgebreider en actueler te maken.
Met andere software binnen Google Health is het mogelijk om deze waarden door te sturen naar bijvoorbeeld het ziekenhuis, schrijft The Wall Street Journal. Bij eventuele afwijkingen worden deze gelijk doorgestuurd naar de arts. Om een zo groot mogelijk bereik te krijgen, is de software gebaseerd op de standaard van de Continua Health Alliance. Dit is een consortium van technologiebedrijven onder leiding van Intel.
Opmaat: De Amerikaanse president Obama heeft elektronische medische dossiers op zijn prioriteitenlijst gezet. De samenwerking tussen IBM en Google Health kan de opmaat vormen naar het online monitoren van chronische ziektes, zegt Dan Pelino, hoofd gezondheidszorg van IBM tegenover de krant. Het elektronisch patiëntendossier in de vorm van Google Health wordt in de Verenigde Staten nog niet veel gebruikt. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.”
Social media is ubiquitously accessible, and enabled by scalable communication techniques. For the third consecutive year, CMO.com have released their CMO’s (Chief Marketing Officer’s) Guide To The Social Landscape. Five new members have made the roster this year, including Pinterest and Google+.
The infographic is presented below in full. However, if youvisit the CMO website the visual can be sorted by customer communication, brand exposure, site traffic and SEO. Somewhat surprisingly, CMO rated Google+ as the top social network in three of these categories, with Twitter securing the number one spot in site traffic. Still, this is a useful one-stop summary of the pros and cons of the different social networks, and a fantastic resource for both brands and marketers.

Google heeft nieuwe bron van inkomsten
Google gaat de technische capaciteit van zijn servercentra verhuren aan externe partijen. Daarmee neemt het een nieuw bedrijfsmodel in exploitatie. Vandaag neemt Google de dienst App Engine in commercieel gebruik. Online diensten die maandelijks ongeveer 5 miljoen pageviews vertonen, kunnen App Engine gratis gebruiken. Voor alles daar boven rinkelt de Google-kassa.
Voor inkomend en uitgaand dataverkeer rekent Google respectievelijk 10 en 12 dollarcent per gigabyte. Een gigabyte dataopslag kost 15 cent. Voor een dollar mag een applicatie 10.000 e-mails verzenden. Dat blijkt uit de nieuwe specificaties die het bedrijf publiceerde. App Engine is een online platform waar bedrijven en onafhankelijke programmeurs hun webapplicaties op kunnen hosten en draaien. Online tekstverwerkers, landkaarten maar bijvoorbeeld ook advertenties uitserveren en fotoboeken zijn daar voorbeelden van.
Google laat de dienst sinds april 2008 testen door belangstellenden. Het App Engine-forum heeft ongeveer 6.500 leden. Hoeveel van hen grote online applicaties bouwt, is niet bekend. App Engine stelt Googles tientallen servercentra, in feite één héle grote computer, open op de wijze waarop Microsoft Windows in de jaren ’80 softwareschrijvers toegang gaf tot de hardware van computers. In de huidige situatie draait de software echter niet op de lokale computer maar op het internet, met alle negatieve gevolgen van dien.
