Amazingly, 38 percent of respondents had never tried a contest on their social media outposts, with photos, topics, custom apps and videos each listed as alternatively good ways to drive engagement.

Cloud computing wordt de technologie voor 2010
Cloud computing wordt dé technologie voor 2010. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Computable onder meer dan duizend experts. In bijna alle topics wordt cloud computing als de belangrijkste trend voor 2010 genoemd. Andere belangrijke thema’s zijn groene ict, open source en open standaarden, virtualisatie, sociale netwerken en kostenbesparing.
‘Vooral of bedrijven een public cloud (zoals Azure) of een private cloud (zoals Amazon) willen hebben en waarom, wordt een belangrijk onderwerp volgend jaar’, zegt technisch consultant Frank Tamminga van Caesar Groep. Onderzoeksbureau Gartner verwacht dat tot 2013 bedrijven hun applicaties en data voorlopig binnen de eigen datacenters gaan beheren. ‘Tot eind 2012 zullen organisaties meer investeren in hun eigen private clouds dan in de diensten van zogenoemde cloud providers, zegt analist Phil Dawson van het onderzoeksbureau.
Een reden om te kiezen voor een publieke cloud in plaats van het opzetten van een eigen cloud is kostenbesparing, zegt ict-architect Hans Klunder van Serious Thinking. ‘De huidige manier van beheren van de ict-infrastructuur is bij veel organisaties niet efficiënt. Kijk wat een cpu-tik bij Amazon kost en wat je eigen business betaalt. Dan zie je een hoop ruimte voor verbetering.’
Beveiliging: Een belangrijk punt binnen cloud computing wordt de beveiliging ervan. Volgens onderzoeksbureau Forrester investeert ruim 80 procent van de ondernemingen voorlopig niet in de cloud. De belangrijkste reden is dat ze zich zorgen maken over de beveiliging van hun applicaties en gegevens. Productmanager Sjon Post van CompuTrain: ‘Onderwerpen waarover wij steeds meer vragen verwachten, zijn: Hoe moeten we de beveiliging ervan waarborgen, wie is feitelijk eigenaar van de informatie en wat wordt opgeslagen?’ Bron.

Cloud Computing, Wat houdt Europa tegen?
Cloud computing is over enkele jaren alomtegenwoordig en even vanzelfsprekend als stroom. Dan zullen we met bevreemding terugkijken op onze interne serverruimtes, gehuurde rackspace, maar vooral op de vrees die op dit moment, vooral in Europa, nog heerst voor Cloud computing. Wat houdt Europa tegen?
Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is computerkracht waarbij capaciteit dynamisch schaalbaar beschikbaar en gevirtualiseerd is. Het wordt als een dienst aangeboden en gebruikers hebben geen kennis over of controle op de fysieke omgeving waarop de ‘cloud’ draait. Zonder dat de meesten van ons het weten, maken we reeds allemaal op een of andere manier gebruik van Cloud computing. Diensten als Gmail en Hotmail zijn bijvoorbeeld gebaseerd op Cloud computing.
Er bestaan verschillende soorten Cloud computing. Er zijn varianten waarbij een compleet besturingssysteem wordt aangeboden waarbij de gebruiker alle rechten binnen dat systeem heeft. Dit biedt de meeste flexibiliteit, maar is ook een meer complexe oplossing. Amazon EC2 is hier een voorbeeld van. EC2 biedt Linux en Windows servers die per uur worden afgerekend. De gebruiker kan hier elke willekeurige applicatie op draaien, dus niet alleen webapplicaties. Inderdaad, er zijn nog applicaties die niet via een browser benaderbaar zijn …
Microsoft biedt met Azure een oplossing waarbij geen besturingssysteem wordt geboden, maar een applicatieruimte; een scala aan diensten en twee databaseoplossingen. Daarnaast zijn er configuratieopties die iets meer controle geven. Google biedt met Google App Engine (GAE) een oplossing waarbij er puur een applicatieruimte en een database geboden wordt. Azure en GAE schalen allebei automatisch op bij meer gebruik. Ook zijn ze gericht op webapplicaties en niet op desktopapplicaties.
Cloud Computing is een breed begrip waar ook de volgende termen onder vallen:
* Sofware as a Service (Saas),
* Storage as a Service,
* Security as a Service,
* Content as a Service,
* Integration as a Service en
* Platform as a Service (Paas).
Op basis van deze definitie, zijn Google Apps (niet hetzelfde als Google App Engine), Zoho etc. ook Cloud computing oplossingen.
Besparen met clouds
Cloud computing is per definitie een gecentraliseerd model. Deze centralisatie brengt met zich mee dat het eenvoudiger is de CO2 uitstoot te verminderen dan wanneer we allemaal onze eigen serverruimte zouden behouden. Aangezien IT op dit moment verantwoordelijk is voor 2% van de globale CO2 uitstoot en dit aandeel in de toekomst alleen maar groter zal worden, is hier veel winst te behalen.
Cloud computing kan ook op andere manieren zorgen voor besparing. Doordat de capaciteit van een cloud gedeeld wordt onder vele afnemers, is er uiteindelijk minder energie nodig om dezelfde diensten te leveren. Hardware standaardisatie, betere recycling van hardware en efficiëntere koeling zijn meer voordelen op een globale schaal.
Daarnaast biedt het afnemers van Cloud computing het voordeel van schaalbaarheid. In een scenario waarbij er sprake is van seizoenale pieken is er traditioneel een serveromgeving nodig die dubbel is uitgevoerd en die een verwachte piek ruim voldoende kan opvangen. De rest van het jaar staat de hardware nutteloos te draaien terwijl het wordt afgeschreven. Cloud computing maakt dit scenario een stuk goedkoper. Doordat de pieken opgevangen kunnen worden door virtueel bij te schalen, is de investering in hardware niet nodig.
Tevens is de beheersinspanning bij het gebruik van Cloud computing lager. Puur het feit dat er geen fysieke hardware is waar aandacht aan besteed moet worden, levert al winst op. Door de flexibiliteit van gevirtualiseerde omgevingen die in mum van tijd ‘bijgeplaatst’ kunnen worden, zijn de beheerskosten van Cloud computing lager. Ja, er is natuurlijk een leercurve, maar die hadden we ook bij traditionele oplossingen. Lagere beheerskosten, maar ook lagere start up-kosten leveren organisaties financieel voordeel op. Kosten van airconditioning, beveiliging, brandblusinstallaties en elektriciteit zijn bij Cloud computing niet aan de orde. Er wordt alleen betaald voor het gebruik van de ‘resources’.
De huidige economische situatie maakt dat organisaties zitten te springen om dergelijke kostenbesparende oplossingen. De VS hebben deze klok al duidelijk horen luiden.
VS omarmen clouds, waar blijft Europa?
Het is interessant om te zien dat de regering in de VS Cloud computing zo stimuleert. Zie hier hoe de regering van de VS omgaat met clouds. Cloud computing wordt door de VS actief gepromoot – op een bijna Postbus-51-achtige manier. Geweldig om te zien dat ze de noodzaak inzien van Cloud computing en op die manier werken aan betere efficiency, kostenbesparing en het milieu. Waarom loopt Europa hier dan nog met een boog omheen, terwijl de voordelen voor het oprapen liggen?
?Er kleven een aantal inherente risico’s aan Cloud computing. Privacy is daarvan de belangrijkste. Organisaties zijn gewend om het bewaken van hun data door hun eigen systeembeheerders op hun eigen servers, in hun eigen kantoren uit te laten voeren. De stap naar ‘de cloud’ is dan moeilijk te nemen. De verschillende aanbieders van clouds gaan anders om met privacy, maar uiteindelijk komt het neer op degene die de applicaties maakt. Door slim gebruik te maken van encryptie van data, een goede wachtwoord ‘policy’ en controle van deze ‘policies’, worden de risico’s beperkt.
Daarnaast is de locatie van de datacenters waar de clouds staan voor sommige organisaties, vanwege wettelijke beperkingen, belangrijk. De overheid moet er bijvoorbeeld voor zorg dragen dat haar data binnen de Europese Economische Ruimte (EER) wordt opgeslagen. Voor zover bekend voldoen alleen EC2 en S3 van Amazon hieraan. Voor beide oplossingen staan sowieso datacenters in Ierland en wordt directe uitwisseling van data tussen EU datacenters en die in de VS niet toegelaten.
Onduidelijk is hoever de Patriot Act reikt. Zouden de VS bij data in datacenters van Microsoft, Google, Amazon mogen komen die niet op VS grondgebied staan?
Beveiliging is ook een hekel punt bij Cloud computing. Niet altijd terecht. Laten we het vergelijken. Zie hier bijvoorbeeld de beveiligingsnormen van Amazon EC2. Waarschijnlijk is EC2 veiliger dan de servers in uw eigen serverruimte op de gang en mogelijk ook veiliger dan de servers die bij uw hostingleverancier in het ‘rack’ hangen.
Tenslotte kan bandbreedte in sommige Europese landen de beperkende factor voor Cloud computing zijn. In gebieden waar bandbreedte beperkt is, zal Cloud computing minder mogelijkheden bieden. In Nederland hebben we voldoende bandbreedte, een stijgende lijn in de snelheid en een dalende trend in de kosten – goed voor clouds. Lees hier verder…

Microsoft heeft te grote achterstand in cloud computing t.o.v. Google
Microsoft kan de voorsprong die Google heeft op het gebied van cloud computing niet meer goedmaken. Dat beweert topman Dave Girouard van de divisie Google Enterprise. In een interview met Computerworld vertelt Girouard dat hij Microsoft als enige echte concurrent ziet op het gebied van Cloud Computing, maar hij voelt zich niet bedreigd door het bedrijf.
“Cloud computing is een nieuwe markt met nieuwe leiders. Microsoft is een geweldig bedrijf, maar wij zijn al een aantal jaar verder met het ontwikkelen van cloudproducten die betrouwbaar, praktisch en veilig zijn”, aldus Girouard.
Cloud computing
Cloud computing is een systeem waarbij software verdeeld is over verschillende computers op het internet. Het komt er op neer dat gebruikers software kunnen raadplegen zonder het programma daadwerkelijk op hun computer te hebben.
Google heeft binnen dit systeem Google Docs ontwikkeld. Met deze dienst kunnen documenten (bijvoorbeeld een tekstbestand of een presentatie) worden aangemaakt en vervolgens online worden opgeslagen. De dienst concurreert onder andere met Office van Microsoft.
Grootste speler
Microsoft is op het gebied van officeapplicaties verreweg de grootste speler op de markt, Girouard denkt echter niet dat het bedrijf dezelfde overmacht kan realiseren als het aankomt op cloud computing.
“Er zullen zeker mensen zijn die blijven hangen bij Microsoft omdat ze ermee bekend zijn, maar deze mensen zullen steeds verder achterop raken. Microsoft zal namelijk alle eerdere ervaringen met officeapplicaties met zich mee moeten slepen.” Lees hier verder…

The big challenge for P2P marketplaces: regulation

There’s been a lot of excitement recently around the emerging sharing economy and collaborative consumption business models. Despite all the enthusiasm, regulatory challenges could dampen the outlook of many disruptive, peer-to-peer (p2p) business models.
As we have written about previously, the sharing economy has brought forth many innovative business models that enable individuals to save and earn money, reconnect with their local communities and shift to more sustainable and environmentally conscious lifestyles.
The innovative, untried nature of these emerging online business models also puts them in a head-on collision course with regulators. While many of these disruptive business ideas are shaking up established industries, like hospitality or urban transportation, in a good way, the regulatory framework they require is still missing.
Arun Sundararajan, professor at New York University Stern School of Business, recently gave an interesting interview with TechCrunch about how to regulate the sharing economy without blocking further innovation.
Its not surprising, when there is something new and innovative, for there to be regulatory challenges around safety,
he told TechCrunch.
Especially p2p marketplaces are faced with these issues, since they enable private individuals to undergo business-like transactions such as renting out their space, car or offering their labor. An increasing number of such transactions has begun to cross the line from being recreational or making a few extra dollars to becoming a significant source of income. This makes these activities commercial and, as Shareable Magazine has pointed out, puts many platforms in a legal grey area.
Here are some of the most pressing ongoing regulatory issues related to p2p business models:
Taxis Challenge Ridesharing
One of the most prominent regulatory issues of the past months has been taking place in on-demand ridesharing in California. The two San Francisco startups SideCar and Lyft enable people driving through the city to give others a ride by connecting through a smartphone app. Since these services’ drivers do not have certified taxi licenses (but do undergo extensive screening), California regulators sent them cease-and-desist letters, leading to an uproar in the California ridesharing community.
In 2010 Uber, a high-end on demand ridesharing service, was also in hot water for competing with regular taxis. The Taxi and Limousine Commission of New York (TLC), the only taxi provider in the city, refused to grant the company the right to operate in the municipality.
Do short term apartment rentals violate rental laws?
P2p vacation rentals — marketplaces that let people rent out their living space for short periods of time to travelers–are increasingly being challenged by city authorities. Many local laws in urban areas prohibit short-term rentals for under 30 days. Nor is the hotel industry exactly thrilled about its new competitors, who are neither regulated nor pay hotel taxes.
Just a few weeks ago, the New York Times reported that many Airbnb hosts in New York are breaking the law (unknowingly) and could be subject to five figure fines or eviction. This has unleashed debates on who is responsible for informing hosts on their local laws and who is accountable in the rare case that something does happen. Since these limitations are not stopping the p2p rental market from continuing to grow at a rapid pace, solutions to these legal challenges are needed soon.
Insurance and p2p carsharing
Even though the actual risk of being dropped by your insurance company when renting out your car on p2p platforms like Getaround, Autonetzer or Voiturelibis very low, it is worth mentioning that insurance is another important area in which the majority of marketplaces still lack a regulatory framework.
In his interview with TechCrunch, which you can watch below, Arun Sundararajan, emphasized that now is a good time to take a step back and look at what the role of regulators should be in the sharing economy. In an industry this new, there is still a lot of work to be done. But if marketplaces work together to raise awareness among regulators, it should only be a matter of time for these challenges to be overcome.
In 2013, we’ll be looking more closely at legal challenges and insurance issues for p2p marketplaces.

Wat is een high-availability hosting cluster?
Wat is een high-availability hosting cluster?
Tegenwoordig wordt er veel met ‘beschikbaarheid’, ‘redundantie’ en ‘zero downtime’ termen gegoocheld. Wie op zoek is naar een hosting platform met optimale uptime garanties en minder singel points of failure moet op een bepaald moment de knoop doorhakken en kiezen voor een high-availability (HA) cluster.
Een high-availability cluster wordt ook wel een failover cluster genoemd. Om een failover hosting cluster succesvol te gebruiken heeft u minstens twee hardware platformen (servers) nodig die uw toepassing huisvesten.
Virtualisatie is een perfecte oplossing om beide platformen redundant en in sync te houden. De failover cluster configuratie zorgt er immers voor dat server B probleemloos de processen overneemt en bijvoorbeeld uw websites ter beschikking stelt als server A een probleem heeft. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van een “Heartbeat” voor de controle van uw failover cluster.
Om het allemaal af te maken is het aan te raden om de data van een high-availability (HA) cluster op een redundante (dubbel uitgevoerd) SAN (Storage Area Network) of DAS (Direct Attached Storage) te zetten.
De data staat dan niet op het cluster zelf, dat maakt het schakelen naar de failover server een stuk sneller en makkelijker. Ook het switchen naar een Hotspare of Failover DC wordt hiermee makkelijker.
Vanzelfsprekend zorg je er ook voor dat de twee servers op een eigen aparte uplink staat met een eigen switch zodat je ook hier weer een singel point of failure opheft. Voor diegene die nog meer uptime willen als een high-availability (HA) cluster kan leveren kan nog denken aan een derde failover DC server die binnen hetzelfde netwerk maar op een andere locatie (datacentrum) staan.
Zo heb je de singel point of failure van het DC ook weggewerkt. Blijft alleen nog het netwerk over.

Endorsements are easily gamed by well-meaning friends or flat-out scammers; wading through them is a chore. Our proprietary algorithms recognize certain patterns and weight the quality of sources to give a more accurate context.

VMware maakt vandaag bekend nauw te gaan samenwerken met Google op het gebied van cloud computing. De twee bedrijven gaan expertise en technologie van elkaar combineren.
VMware en Google willen op meerdere fronten samenwerken om cloud-applicaties productiever en flexibeler te maken, en gebruikers in staat te stellen makkelijk van de ene cloud naar de andere te bewegen.
De te initiëren projecten stellen Java-ontwikkelaars in staat rijke webapplicaties te bouwen, Google- en VMware-performancetools te gebruiken voor cloud-applicaties en Spring Java-applicaties op de Google App Engine in te zetten. Door de samenwerking hopen de ondernemingen de zakelijke inzet en acceptatie van cloud computing te versnellen.
Daarnaast moeten ontwikkelaars van bedrijfssoftware efficiënter kunnen zijn bij het bouwen, implementeren en beheren van applicaties binnen iedere cloud-omgeving; extern, intern en hybride. Concreet gaat het om een combinatie van VMware’s vCloud Technologies, SpringSource, Google Web Toolkit en Google App Engine.
“Bedrijven zijn actief op zoek naar manieren om cloud computing in te zetten. Ze worden getrokken door de economische voordelen die de cloud biedt, maar zijn in toenemende mate ook geïnteresseerd in de flexibiliteit en innovatie die cloud computing belooft”, zegt Paul Maritz, President en CEO van VMware.

Wat is VMWare?
VMware is een Amerikaans softwarebedrijf dat diverse producten uitbrengt die virtualisatie mogelijk maken. Vanaf januari 2004 was EMC volledig eigenaar van VMware. 13 augustus 2007 ging VMWare naar de beurs. De koers steeg in ongeveer een dag van de introductieprijs van 29 dollar per aandeel naar 51 dollar per aandeel, waarmee VMware op dat moment het op vier na grootste softwarebedrijf ter wereld werd.

Hosting, designing and maintaining a website can be done on a million way’s.
When we started with making websites in 1998 there were only e few way’s to design a website the most used was typing HTML4 in notepad.
Now we are almost 2013, business and internet did change a lot, HTML changed, WordPress, Typo3 and Magento got secure, stable and very usable.
Social Media became very important, customers are demanding security, services and high uptimes.

Uptime:
There are a lot of ways to improve your uptime, the three most important reasons for downtime are security, hardware and software failure. We use a private local (NL) Cloud (VMware) setup to reduce the single points of failure (SPF) in the hardware (Dell/Cisco), all hardware is redundant. We only use and support fully managed Linux/Plesk VPS in our Cloud. The security level is very high (later more on this) and the software we use is all open source. At this moment we have uptime numbers of > 99,90% the last two years.
Service and Helpdesk:
We monitor and log our Cloud and VPS servers 24/7 on every single service running on the Cloud 24 hours per day. If something goes wrong there are engineers ready to fix this ASAP. The Cloud and all VPS servers are PCI-Compliant and behind firewalls. The virtualization layer and the OS layer running on our own hardened kernels. All servers have their own SSL certificate, my own website has an EV SSL certificate. We monitor and log our Cloud and VPS servers 24/7 on every single service running on the Cloud 24 hours per day. Customers are only getting back-end (editor level) access to their websites, so we do not give out SSH, FTP or Plesk access. We handle this tasks for the end-user if necessary. We make daily back-ups an monitor all IP numbers on RBL e.d. We are working with Web of Trust (WOT), Comodo (EV SSL), TrustCloud.com and Trust-Guard.com.
WordPress CMS:
We use WordPress (and Typo3 for large companies) for a CMS website, we work with WordPress a long time and have a lot of experience with it. WordPress has it all, Security, Custom and Theme designs, Plugins, CMS, Weblog, SEO ready, Social Media ready, easy to use, cheap and always’ s up-to-date. We maintain WordPress, the Theme/Template design and all Plugins, so we take care of all upgrades and updates.
